Welcome to the WWAMI Medical Student Program in Pediatrics

Our purpose is to provide you with time saving WWAMI information that will assist you in learning about the WWAMI clerkships and the WWAMI Electives that are only open to UW medical students.

Clinical Phase

The Pediatric WWAMI Program coordinates all clerkships outside of the Seattle area.  Each clerkship site is unique in the setting, faculty and patients seen.

Prior to an active rotation, you will receive an e-mail from our office 8-10 weeks prior with site information and credentialing information to complete. Some sites require 90 to 120 days advance credentialing.

Clerkship Sites

Students do their core pediatrics rotation at one of twenty-six sites throughout the WWAMI region. Each site has unique features and provides students an opportunity to evaluate a wide variety of pediatric patients. All students complete the same core pediatric requirements and take an online examination at the end of the course. All required course materials and forms can be found on the Clinical Phase Page.

Below you will find a description of each site, including location, rotation structure and required credentialing. If you have questions or concerns, please don't hesitate to contact us.

IMPORTANT:  It is your responsibility to complete ALL credentialing at your training sites. Failure to do so will result in a delay in access to systems at the site and may lead to your needing to drop the rotation. Read carefully, respond in a timely manner and follow-up on deadlines. Ask questions if you are unsure!

Required Drug Testing – If your site requires drug testing, it is your responsibility to get the drug test through the SOM process. Check to confirm whether this applies to your site.

Letter of Good Standing – If your site instructions require a Letter of Good Standing, it will be placed in your E-Value portfolio. It is your responsibility to forward this per the credentialing instructions for your site.

Background Release Authorization form – If your site requires a signature on a background release authorization form, you need to direct that form to somcompl@uw.edu and request a signature from an SOM representative. It is your responsibility to forward this per the credentialing instructions for your site.

Compliance Documents -- There's information on how to access your compliance documents

Credentialing Fees -- If your site requires payment to register on a credentialing website, you can request reimbursement from gowwami@uw.edu at the end of your rotation.

Career Advising

We are dedicated to providing career advising support to all students at the UW who are interested in a career in Pediatrics or Internal Medicine-Pediatrics. Make sure you talk to your site director or pediatric preceptor for advice about what it is like to be a pediatrician.

In your Explore and Focus phase, you will be assigned a specific career advisor to help you through the application process. This typically happens in April or May (after the Match occurs for the preceding class). These career advisors are all College Mentors as well, so you can ask them questions anytime!

We know that this can be a stressful time, but we have provided answers to frequently asked questions, a list of career advisors, and a detailed timeline for applying to residencies.  Read more about Career Advising.

WRITE

The WRITE Program is an 18- to 22-week rural clinical medical training experience.  During the student's third year and prior to the WRITE experience, the student completes several areas of required courses, including three weeks of Pediatrics, the inpatient portion of your pediatrics training.

When the WRITE students start their on-site portion of the WRITE program, students report to their selected site where they complete their remaining third-year requirements, including the final three weeks of Pediatrics, the outpatient portion of the pediatric clerkship.

The requirements were presented to you during your inpatient pediatrics, any items that you have not completed will be required while you are at the WRITE site.

To see the Pediatrics requirements go to the "Pediatric Clerkship Core Materials" webpage.

The WRITE program guidelines for your reference is located on the "WRITE" website. This website lists all of the current WRITE training locations, including site descriptions, physician leadership and contact information, expectations and local healthcare facilities that you may interact with. It also includes housing, community activities and more for each site.
