Professional Bio

Clinical Interests: Counseling for prenatal patients and their partners whose fetuses are at high risk for life-threatening and complex surgical and medical problems.

Scholarly Focus: Development of methods to teach empathetic communication skills to clinicians, and methods to help parents make difficult medical decisions about their high-risk fetus or newborn in alignment with their goals and values.

Administration/Education Roles: Neonatology liaison to the Fetal Care and Intervention Center at Seattle Children’s Hospital and the University of Washington Medical Center; member of the CONNECT program leadership team for teaching communication skills to SCH clinicians and non-clinical staff; member of the Education subcommittee of the CUMG Physician Education, Billing, Compliance Committee; member of the SCH/UW Pediatric Intern Retreat Steering Committee; and division educator for professional billing documentation.  Distinguished faculty member at VitalTalk, an international non-profit organization that teaches communication skills such as responding to emotion with empathy, mapping patient values and goals of care, and proposing treatment plans that align with those values and goals.
