Somaya Abuelazm, MD
Assistant Professor
I began my medical journey at Alexandria University in Egypt, where I earned my medical degree and completed my pediatric residency. Following this, I worked as a neonatal hospitalist in Dubai, United Arab Emirates. Driven by a strong commitment to advancing neonatal care through clinical excellence, research, and education, I moved to the United States. Here, I completed a pediatric residency at Brookdale University Hospital in New York, followed by a Neonatal-Perinatal Medicine fellowship at Cleveland Clinic Children’s Hospital.
My research primarily focuses on neonatal respiratory support and outcomes, particularly emphasizing non-invasive ventilation techniques. I have conducted translational research on volatile organic compounds in the exhaled breath of newborns and pregnant women, a line of investigation I am excited to continue at Seattle Children’s. Additionally, I have actively participated in neonatal epidemiological studies. My clinical interests also include neonatal point of care ultrasound (POCUS) and innovative methods for surfactant administration, such as through supraglottic airways (SALSA).
I am also deeply passionate about supporting and empowering the next generation of women in medicine, especially those from underrepresented groups. Outside the NICU, I enjoy running, CrossFit, working on creative DIY projects, and participating in book clubs to explore diverse ideas and perspectives. Weekends bring special joy as I spend time with my nephews and my beloved cat Cocco.
