October 9 marks Indigenous Peoples' Day, a time to recognize and reflect on the experiences and contributions of American Indians and Alaska Natives. We acknowledge that the University of Washington is located on the land of Indigenous people, both past and present.
The University of Washington has several designated areas specifically for indigenous students. The newest addition is the Center for Indigenous Health, housed in UW's Pediatrics RR Wing at the UW Medical Center. The Center for Indigenous Health aims to motivate younger generations to pursue a career in medicine, ultimately leading to a rise in the number of Indigenous physicians practicing both in Washington State and across the country.
Created and led by Dr. Jason Deen and aided by Millie Kennedy, the Center is a space for indigenous UW physicians and residents to connect and foster community. The Center also outreaches to students still in school interested in the medical field.
