Dr. Craig Jackson will officially transition from Professor of Pediatrics to Emeritus Professor of Pediatrics to acknowledge his lifetime contributions to the division, department, institutions, and field.

Dr. Jackson will continue his work with the CONNECT program at Seattle Children's and advance his engagement as a national VitalTalk facilitator, as well as continue to oversee the department's Prenatal Consultation program (and see outpatient prenatal consults) as part of our Fetal Care and Intervention Center.

"I’m so privileged in my new Emeritus status to be able to work 40% time and continue helping parents make tough decisions in prenatal clinic and continue helping providers find more skillful and effective ways to lead goals of care conversations," said Dr. Jackson.

Dr. Jackson joined UW Pediatrics in 1985 and has had a tremendous career here. In the 1980s and 1990s, he helped lead our division's work on lung mechanics, surfactant, high-frequency ventilation, and liquid ventilation with Alan Hodson and others. He served as NICU Medical Director at Seattle Children's from 1991-2016, during which time the NICU grew substantially and was ranked 5th in the nation by US News & World Report.

His contributions to UW Pediatrics and Seattle Children's strategic and business planning for neonatal services have had enduring benefits. He had key roles in developing contracts at several local clinics and hospitals. In our Neonatology division, he has been a pillar, and trusted leader, having served as acting division head from 2004-2005 and associate head for regional development from 2009-2021.

While his contributions and impact on countless trainees and patient families are beyond measure, notable honors include:

  • K08 Clinical Investigator Award from NIH 1986-1991
  • Outstanding Teacher Award by UW Pediatric Residency Program 1997-1998
  • Executive Masters in Health Administration 2005-2007
  • VitalTalk Distinguished Faculty 2022
  • Co-authorship with Edith Cheng of "Prenatal Diagnosis and Counseling" in Avery's Diseases of the Newborn 2023

Congratulations to Dr. Jackson on achieving this milestone. We look forward to continuing to have him among our ranks and as a colleague going forward.
